AVCP Head Start (Bethel and village centers, ages 3-5)

AVCP Head Start is a free preschool for children ages 3-5, with centers in Bethel and villages; for 2026-27 AVCP listed Akiachak, Bethel, Chefornak, Kotlik, Quinhagak, Russian Mission, Scammon Bay, Tuluksak and Tuntutuliak, and home-based teachers visit some communities without a center. Placement is by need using a point system; most slots go to lower-income families, but over-income children can be placed when space allows. Applications are accepted year-round: fill out AVCP's Youth & Child Unit Parent/Guardian Application and attach the child's birth certificate, immunization records, income documentation (W-2s, recent paystub, monthly bills), and an IEP/IFSP or custody papers if they apply. A child turning 3 after the school year starts can apply now and is placed after their birthday when there is space. You can also apply through your local Head Start, an AVCP Family Advocate or a TWD Navigator. Head Start office 907-543-8720 ([email protected]); AVCP toll-free 1-800-478-3521.
