Heating assistance in Bethel — which office to apply to (start here)
Apply to ONE office, not all of them. The State says plainly: you cannot receive heating assistance from the state if you are eligible to apply through a tribal organization, and applying to the wrong one delays your benefit. If you live in Bethel and your household is at or below 150% of poverty, ONC (Orutsararmiut Native Council) runs LIHEAP for Bethel residents — 907-543-2608 or 800-478-2654 in Alaska, 117 Alex Hately Drive, Mon-Fri 8:30am-5pm. You do not have to be a tribal member: a valid State ID is accepted. People living in subsidized housing (AHFC/ASHA, AVCP or BNC units) are not eligible through ONC. If your tribe has compacted the service with AVCP, apply through AVCP's Benefits Division — 907-543-8650 (toll-free 1-800-478-3157) or [email protected], Family Service Center, 1200 State Highway; call 907-543-8717 if you are not sure whether your tribe is compacted. Your Tribal Administrator has to sign that application. Everyone else applies to the State Heating Assistance Program: 800-478-7778, or the Bethel Public Assistance office at 460 Ridgecrest Drive Suite 121. Out of fuel or holding a shut-off notice? Say the word crisis when you call — ONC prioritises households under 5 gallons or with a shut-off notice, AVCP expedites when someone in the home is 60+, 2 or under, or disabled, and AVCP Regional Housing Authority's Emergency Voucher can pay up to $500 (907-543-3121).
