LKSD Yup'ik / Yugtun dual-language program

Every LKSD elementary school teaches in both Yup'ik (Yugtun) and English. When a child enters kindergarten, a language assessment decides whether Yugtun Language Arts (YLA) or English is their first literacy language for K-1; from 2nd grade on, students get equal time in YLA and English. In Bethel, ME School and Gladys Jung run the dual-language model and Ayaprun Elitnaurvik is full immersion. Yup'ik curriculum questions go to the LKSD curriculum department ([email protected]) or the district office, 907-543-4800.

Who it’s for & requirements

All LKSD K-6 students; placement by kindergarten language assessment
