Iñupiat Community of the Arctic SlopeView organization ›DID YOU KNOW?
The harvest of Chukchi Sea polar bears is subject to certain rules, governed by a treaty between the United States and Russia.
Under the Treaty, the following is NOT allowed when harvesting Chukchi Sea polar bears:
- Harvest of female bears with cubs of any age.
- Harvest of cubs less than a year of age.
- Harvest of bears in dens, preparing to enter dens, or who have just left dens.
- Using aircraft, large (50ft+) motorized vessels, and large motorized vehicles (designed to carry 9+ passengers) to harvest.
- Use of poisons, traps, or snares.
Please be mindful of these rules when practicing subsistence. Several of our communities have reported increased sightings of polar bears, including reports of mothers with cubs, in and near their communities.
