KNOM Radio Mission·ShishmarefA couple weeks ago we got a ring on our door from Thomas Barr. In his coat pocket was a cassette tape that he said contained a profile KNOM did on him and his carving talents while he was living in Shishmaref in 2001. We took the recording and plugged it into an old tape deck we keep for situations just like this. The tape has some scratches and imperfections from years of following Barr around the region - but what was on the tape felt timeless. Between shifts at Bering Air, Barr still carves to this day. We’ve digitized the tape and will be sharing it with the region during the 1 o'clock hour Wednesday afternoon on our AM, FM and online stream signals. A copy of this recording is now available on our website: https://knom.org/2026/10/01/knom-profile-of-thomas-barr-in-shishmaref/KNOM Broadcast: Profile of Thomas Barr162114 shares

KNOM Radio MissionIt’s been two months since the Nome Joint Utility System board last met, but the conversation picked up right where it left off: long-overdue audits and the lack of a current budget. The utility’s finances were set to be discussed behind closed doors in executive session. That changed when board member Carl Emmons moved to add the topic to the public agenda. “I think there’s a whole bunch of people in this town that are really curious about what the hell’s been going on, and I think we should be up front,” Emmons said.Nome Joint Utility System Board Discusses Audits and Budget7297 shares
